Tile grout or a movement joint: which needs attention?
Missing grout between tiles, a split seal at a wall edge and a leak through the membrane are different problems. Tell us whether the concern is worn grout, stained joints, loose tiles or water appearing in another room. That helps define whether you need tile regrouting, joint resealing or a waterproofing assessment.
We accept tile regrouting enquiries for tiled floors beyond bathrooms, as well as showers and balconies. For a shower screen or shower perimeter, start with shower resealing and regrouting. For an outdoor tiled area with ponding or leakage below, see balcony waterproofing.
How are materials chosen?
Cement-based grout, epoxy grout and flexible sealants serve different purposes. Epoxy grout may suit a stain-prone tiled area, but it is not a repair for a failed membrane beneath tiles. The choice depends on the tile finish, joint dimensions, location and condition found on site. The quote should identify the proposed material rather than treating every joint alike.
Sealant is used for appropriate flexible joints. A bond breaker controls adhesion within a specified joint or membrane detail so movement can be accommodated; it is not tile grout. An epoxy moisture-barrier coating is also not epoxy grout. Read our guide to regrouting, resealing and membrane replacement before choosing a repair based only on the word “epoxy”.
Can regrouting stop a leak without removing tiles?
A local grout or seal repair may be appropriate where the defect is limited to that joint. Recurring dampness after resealing, loose tiles or water reaching the room below needs further assessment. Regrouting the surface does not replace a concealed waterproofing membrane or repair damaged backing.
What affects a tile regrouting quote?
Share the suburb, approximate tiled area, indoor or outdoor location, tile type and the condition of the joints. Mention any previous repairs and whether water is escaping. Access, preparation, joint condition, selected materials and any separate tile or membrane work affect the scope. We do not assume that new grout alone will resolve an unexplained leak.
Photos are optional. Send a wide view and a close-up of the affected joints if safely accessible, or arrange a site visit without them. The written quote should distinguish fixed tile joints from movement joints and identify any work outside the grout repair.
